Winter Calling | Time to layer up! (Including a giveaway - $50 gift cards !)

I have always been a layering fan when it comes to men’s fashion. Therefore I think winter is a great style opportunity. But it’s not and never should be just throwing on as many clothes as you can. Layering style is an art!

Layering is alls about being versatile which gives you an opportunity to mix up. The ones you should have are:

- Shirt or T-Shirt
- Cardigan
- Blazer
- Vest
- Jumper (only in some cases).

In a daily look you can always use a t-shirt and a cardigan with a shirt inside for a classic layering look during the day. But when it comes to office style or a gents look my advice would be a vest and a blazer which gives you the look of a catch with a sharp and effortless style.

PS: To be honest I can easily say that men’s vests are kind of a turn on for women.

THE NAUGHTY SCHOLAR LOOK NEVER GETS OLD!

Simon Baker is the first name that I can think about for vests. Justin Timberlake and David Beckham are the other runner ups who make the vests work as the coolest edgy style!

That also shows us that you don’t have to wear a tie every time you go with a vest. Rolled up sleeves are a must though…

If you are new to vests try to go with the colour grey. This is the safest choice. √ But you can always be more bold and go with Nick Wooster's style too...

Tips To Choose A Long Coat

I thought it would be a smart thing to start with a Tom Ford long coat photo. Because this coat make you want to have one like this even though you don't like long coats at all!
I like long coats on men - especially for formal outfit - if they don't look like Blade, the vampire slayer :)
So... How long is too long?

(In this post you can also find great long coats from the best designers, and also great ones under £ 150. Scroll down to see the suggestions)

BASICS:
  • First rule is: Make sure that your long coat is at mid-thigh. It shouldn’t touch the ground. Especially if you’re a short guy. In fact if you are shorter than average try the ones that are on the level of just under your hips.
  • Second rule: This is the only outfit that I don't recommend you to go colourful. Patterns are ok but not a bright solid colour!

A top trend for this season, the long coat is not to be chosen lightly. For the ideal length with details that make all the difference, The MenLookTribune revisits the most important points to keep in mind.

For Autumn-Winter 2013, it will literally invade the podiums of the major clothing stores: the long coat, which brings chic and nobility, but in reverse, finds itself as one of the top favorites of men’s fashion trends for the season. Ideal to cover you in the coldest temperatures, it remains a large investment – if not a primordial one – for this winter. But durable usage means choosing a coat with attention to the tiniest details for fear of needing to change it after one month.

THE LENGTH

The long coat of the contemporary man doesn’t touch the ground – far from it – the majority will wear the long coat at mid-thigh. At this length, the shortest of us won’t have any risk of seeing their silhouette minimized, and the tallest will see their silhouette enhanced without much effort.

WHICH FABRIC ?

A long coat means warmth, but also lets the body breathe: to fulfill these conditions, natural materials like wool and cashmere are supposed to be the best possible options. For those who are more sensitive, add to the mix a collar or fur lining, ideal for remaining warm, or even add a quilted vest under your long coat.

THE DETAILS THAT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Once the length and fabric conditions are met, the choices still remain vast: in order to differentiate, the brands don’t lack imagination in creating the long coat unique to their genre, distinguishing themselves with subtle details which make all the difference. A few of the accents really hit the mark: the oversized collared coat, the twin fabric coat, and the camel remain the main victors of the season.

Autumn/Winter 2013 Favourites – Top 10 Wardrobe Essentials for Men

It’s not getting cold. It is cold.

I wonder if we have a transition with Autumn or go directly into winter. In both cases your wardrobe must be ready; transition from t-shirts to long sleeve shirts and knitwear. Flip flops will be put in a box and boots are coming out. The best thing of climate change is to shop for the new season! :) (Women talking)
I always think Autumn as the comfort season. The only uncomfortable thing is about Autumn is that you have to carry a light jacket or a jumper with you during the day in order to wear it at night. Anyway...

I won’t hesitate to say that this is a list of “essentials” because if you are a guy who cares about his style and look there are some ‘must have’ outfits for this season.

First of all I have to remind you that grey, Emerald green and burgundy are THE colours for AW 2013.

We have seen furs a lot on runways at fashion weeks but if they have asked me before I would have warned them not to.

Top 10 Wardrobe Essentials (that I think a man should have for AW 2013)

1. Trench Coat. – Trench coats are essentials for in-between seasons. The classic trench coat style is a double breasted khaki number, made famous by Burberry. You can also have a leather one to follow the leather madness for this season.

2. Boots. I do like hiking boots, biker boots and chukka boots. According to TopMan style lessons, Brogues are still a big trend and work well with trousers of all fits. Loafers look best with slim fit trousers since they are traditionally narrower in style. Wear suede with chinos and bright socks for a contemporary twist.

3. Chinos and flannel trousers. No matter if you wear short or long boots turn ups or cuffed trousers are the way to display you shoes which are the primary signal of a stylish person. Chinos and flannel trousers are on trend this season; just don’t forget  the turn ups. The colours grey, khaki, and burgundy are the ones you may choose. Also – if you haven’t heard it yet - camo has officially travelled from the runway to the streets. Jeans are timeless for any kind of fashion so feel free for jeans. I also do like pleated trousers but if I were you I would wear them only in black or grey.

4. Leather jackets and accessories. Leather is a high trend on this season and it’s not just for jackets. A pair of leather gloves is a must for your wardrobe too.

5. Colourful coats. When it’s cold the only thing people see on streets are coats. Whatever the weather, be fashionably prepared with stylish coats & jackets. That doesn’t mean that you should wear a neon pink one but try to be away from black for a while. Mustard, Navy, and red can be useful for a trendy look. Also burgundy is another runway trend colour for outwear.

6. Braces. I love accessorizing a style. If you don’t accessorise your style, you are just a copycat because accessorize let’s you shout your fashion sense. It’s an easy way for a trendy look. Last year we saw some braces but we will see it more this year. It’s a little bit tricky though. If you don’t use braces correctly you may look silly. My suggestion is braces should be used in a style without a hat. Keep that in mind.

Braces are easy to find almost every store. My favourite ones are mostly from Ralph Lauren.

7. Hats. – If you are not a hat person at least try beanies!  Trapper hats are cool too.

8. Statement carves and snoods. Do not hesitate to go big as blankets or twisted up and knotted tight.

9. No roll neck jumpers. V-neck maybe. Shawl and Crew Neck for sure. Besides the plain jumpers you may also try striped, textured and cable knits. On the other hand monochrome is on trend. Plain jumpers that will fit perfectly over a shirt and tie combo, and will be a stylish addition to wear with a suit. I’ve always liked ‘layer on layer’ trend so jumper over a shirt would be my first choice. Grunge and oversize jumpers are popular for AW 13 too. It’s also said that animal prints are for AW 13 but not my favourite.

10. Messenger bags & Backpacks. I’m not a fan of bags (Shoulder bags) when it comes to menswear but messenger bags and packbacks seem reasonable and good; also on trend.

For men bags I would go with Bally.
